Who IS Steve Breen?

Cartoonist • Author • Creator of Powerbirds • Two-Time Pulitzer Prize Winner

ABOUT 

Steve Breen was born in Los Angeles and raised in nearby Orange County. He attended the University of California at Riverside. Steve won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1998 for his work at the Asbury Park Press and a second Pulitzer in 2009 while at The San Diego Union-Tribune.

 

He was a Pulitzer finalist in 2025 for his work with inewsource.com. Steve has a master’s degree in digital media management from USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. He has written and illustrated children’s books including Stick, Violet the Pilot, Woodpecker Wants a Waffle, Sky & Ty, and Sib Squad. Steve is also the creator of the animated TV show "Powerbirds" for NBCUniversal.

He lives in San Diego County with his family and enjoys tacos, running along the coast, playing the guitar, and reading.
